  • Overview

    As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will own the design, development, and verification test of high-performance communications systems for various flight vehicles.  This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of:
    • Knowledge of basic communication physics
    • A familiarity with currently available commercial / aviation / space grade communications equipment
    • Proficiency with system-level communication engineering such as link budget calculations
    • Ability to anticipate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues in a fast paced, hands-on, team environment
    • Support of vehicle-level RF/comm checkouts, flight operations and in-the-field system debugging

    Responsibilities

    • Requirements development, performance modeling and simulation, component / algorithm selection and design, qualification and acceptance test planning and execution, and performance / status reporting
    • Architect communications system solutions using a mixture of custom and COTS communications hardware; then design, integrate, and test flight hardware assemblies for functionality / robustness against requirements
    • Serve as the technical design focal for the New Shepard vehicle communications systems during test and flight operations;  participate in operations, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and post-test data analysis of communications systems (position will require travel to New Shepard test facility in Texas)
    • System Engineering:  conduct architecture and design, performance, risk, safety, operation and cost optimization trade studies, and lead / conduct design reviews for communications systems

    Qualifications

    • B.S. degree or higher in an applicable field (electrical engineering, physics, etc.)
    • 8+ years of experience in design, development, test and operation of complex RF communication systems
    • Digital signal processing algorithm design, modeling, simulation and verification experience
    • Software defined radio implementation (phase/frequency/timing loops, etc.)
    • Hands-on experience and proficiency in comms system troubleshooting including experience with lab test equipment (signal generator, spectrum analyzer, high speed scopes, vector signal analyzers, etc.)
    • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the communication systems product lifecycle
    • High attention to detail and strong task ownership;  must demonstrate pride in all work
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

    Desired

    • Master of Science or higher degree in an applicable field (electrical engineering, physics, etc.)
    • 10+ years of experience in leading teams in the design, development, test and operation of complex RF communication systems (preferably SatCom systems)
    • Knowledge of communications site analysis, transmitter and receiver orientation and location. Able to read co-site analysis, determine optimal antenna orientation, and verify with a spectrum analyzer
    • Intimacy in communications systems algorithm design including modulation, pulse shaping, frequency/phase/timing recovery loops, and channel coding
    • Digital and analog circuit and filter design, simulation, assembly, and test experience
    • Experience with launch vehicle communication systems hardware development, integration, and test
    • Design of complex communications systems on flight vehicles and ground support equipment
    • Experience with data analysis, programming and scripting (Matlab, Winplot, C/C++, Python, etc.)
    • Knowledge of systems engineering practices, integration processes, and quality control
    • Experience as technical lead of a design team
