  • Overview

    As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for materials and process engineering tasks related to the selection, design, and manufacturing of polymer matrix composites for various spaceflight systems.  You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of composite material characterization, supporting design for produciblity, material selection, quality control, and new material development. 


    • Embedded Composites M&P support for Blue Origin’s family of launch vehicles
    • Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to define material requirements and successfully implement production solutions
    • Lead composite materials and process selection, testing, and qualification efforts
    • Support manufacturing operations, triage manufacturing issues, and run laminate, element, and structure-level testing campaigns
    • Engage external suppliers to develop new materials and processes for demanding operational conditions unique to space vehicle structures


    • B.S. degree or higher in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field
    • 8+ years of experience with composite materials and process development in a production manufacturing environment
    • Experience with composites M&P support for airframe or launch vehicle composite primary structures
    • Familiarity with typical aerospace composites and related materials (prepregs, fibers, resins, cores, adhesives, coatings, etc.)
    • Experience with structural adhesive bonds, and qualification of structural bonds
    • Experience with aerospace composite manufacturing processes including prepreg, wet layup, sandwich fabrication, and automated manufacturing methodologies (e.g. AFP, ATL)
    • Experience preparing specifications, test reports, and other documentation
    • Experience developing and executing plans for material characterization, such as mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and chemical analysis
    • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation and implementation
    • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle small and large projects with a diversity of customers
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.


    • Expertise with high-temperature polymer matrix composite materials
    • Experience with cryogenic application of composite materials, for pressurized and unpressurized structures
    • Experience with statistical analysis and preparation of composite allowables and design values
    • Expertise in aerospace adhesives and bonding processes
    • Hands-on composite fabrication experience
    • Hands-on experience with composite mechanical testing
    • Experience or knowledge in analytical methods (i.e. DMA, DSC, mechanical testing)
    • Experience with Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs)
