    As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for automating a wide range of processes and operations to increase the efficiency of launch cycles, engineering, and data management. A significant part of this effort will be understanding the interplay of the systems; how the vehicles operate; the differences between the vehicles; and the opportunities for improvements to the vehicles, facilities, systems, and launch procedures to make each successive mission more efficient, effective, safe, and affordable. You will be part of the New Shepard (NS) Operations Engineering team, which reviews technical decisions with the NS Design Definition Authority in areas outside their scope of authority. The Operations Engineering team includes operations engineers specializing in fluid systems, mechanical systems, avionics, software, hydraulics, structures and overall vehicle systems integrity and performance.

    This position will focus on systems automation software for all of the vehicle and ground systems on the currently flying and newer versions of the New Shepard launch vehicles and crew capsules, with an emphasis on daat automation as a tool to improve the ability to support and maintain a flight cadence of one mission per week. The job will be based in Kent, with routine travel to Blue Origin’s launch site in Texas. Additional responsibilities may be assigned depending on individual experience and qualifications. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment to and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.


    • Develop software tools and systems to automate post-flight data review
      • Update and maintain the system that collects data logs and uploads them to the data historization system (e.g. data logger automation)
      • Automate and improve the ability to display and review vehicle subsystem performance trends across multiple flights and multiple vehicles
      • Implement and improve tools for spotting out of family or out of tolerance behavior in flight data
      • Work with design engineers to create and implement algorithms to predict impending hardware failures and inform the preventative maintenance schedule
    • Develop software tools and systems to automate launch operations and vehicle maintenance
      • Identify manual operations that can be automated by closed-loop control or sequencing
      • Identify system checkouts and flight readiness assessments that can be automated to reduce manual verifications
      • Implement automation solutions identified and agreed upon by systems owners
      • Document and develop user manuals for the automation solutions implemented
    • Provide training to operators as necessary
    • Support special projects where needed
    • Participate in pre-flight software qualifications and post-flight data reviews
    • Become certified and act as a back-up vehicle operator for non-hazardous operations (i.e., power on, run basic procedures, monitoring, shutdown, etc.)
    • Willing and available to travel to our West Texas Launch Site for launch operations in addition to all maintenance operations needed to maintain the flight operations schedules
    • Assist as needed with coordinating the release and deployment of all vehicle, ground systems, and engineering support software


    • Minimum of a B.S. in an engineering discipline with a strong emphasis on software
    • Familiarity with working in a Linux command-line-based OS and software deployment
    • Proficient programming in Python, C++, and MATLAB
    • Comfortable with basic network troubleshooting
    • Strong coordination and project management skills. Must be able to track, manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks and jobs
    • Excellent computer skills with the ability to use a variety of management and planning software tools, including the ability to rapidly learn and apply new software tools as required
    • A proven track record of working successfully with multiple other disciplines, and the ability to evaluate technical recommendations from subject matter experts in a wide range of disciplines
    • Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships within the organization
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.


    • S. in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
    • 5+ years working with safety critical systems
    • 5+ years experience with process control systems (PID loops, sequencers, etc)
