  • Overview

    As a Chief Engineer, you will serve as the engineering lead to coordinate the design, analysis, systems engineering, avionics, and component project engineering production and development within Blue’s business units and programs. In this role, you will provide engineering leadership to business units and have oversight for all aspects of the engineering processes associated with the development of our systems. It is expected that in this role you will perform high level and complex advisory and consulting work for the company as the company's recognized authority for broad program areas or in an intensely specialized area.

    Responsibilities

    Program Technical Leadership

    • As part of the Engineering Centers of Excellence, support Blue’s business units and programs to ensure seamless technical communication and integration of services
    • Provide periodic reports to leadership or customers on program progress and issue resolution.
    • Present at group or corporate level reviews.
    • Assist in technical objectives and approaches to production/operations engineering efforts.
    • Lead and direct failure/anomaly or supplier/production issue/anomaly investigations in support of development/production/O&M efforts.
    • Support planning of the engineering activity in conjunction with the Program Manager and other business unit leaders, providing follow-on technical direction to ensure the technical success of the program.
    • Provide guidance, direction, and feedback to managers, staff engineers, and leadership on highly complex challenges, resulting in critical impact to the development of the system.
    • Determine systemic root causes and appropriate corrective actions from specific RCA instances.

    People and Team Performance Management

     

    • Coach, support, and motivate high performing engineering teams to work efficiently to support the development and mission execution of the system. 
    • Influence the design, development, integration, and testing of components and systems for aerospace applications.

     

    Engineering Requirements and Standards

     

    • Provide guidance on the implementation and tailoring of company standards.  Hold technical design authority for variation to standards that balance business unit or program risk, cost, and schedule.
    • Ensure the system design meets requirements and that the design is executable within cost and schedule constraints.
    • Support definition of system architecture products and requirements.
    • Provide subject matter expertise to ensure that requirements and interfaces are completely and consistently flowed down to lower level components and their resultant hardware and software designs meet requirements.

     

    Risk Management, Lean Execution and Improvements

     

    • Provide risk assessments for programmatic decisions to ensure proper technical rigor and information is part of the decision process. Ensure mitigation plans are in place, feasible, and being monitored and updated.
    • Set and promote high standards for quality and safety. Maintain Blue’s engineering process and drive technical excellence by ensuring business unit and program outputs meet technical standards. Identify and drive improvements within the business unit.
    • Ensure engineering leaders are educated on the importance of process excellence and the application of continuous improvement methods. Lead by example in the use of strategy deployment, kaizen, problem solving, and lessons learned. Apply APQP, Six Sigma techniques to drive continuous improvement.

     

    Systems Integration

     

    • Ensure upfront systems engineering thinking and activities to incorporate operation and sustainment considerations early into component and system designs.
    • Perform engineering and integration activities to complete the development, verification and fielding of the system with a focus on system architecture design and implementation.
    • This position requires the ability to make complex engineering decisions with little oversight based on technical, cost, and schedule considerations. The ideal candidate for this role is experienced in leading cross-functional engineering project teams, in addition to: mentoring, coaching and developing staff, including skills in performance, conflict management

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of a B.S. degree in aerospace, mechanical, industrial engineering
    • 15+ years experience working on aerospace development programs or production lines in both leadership and hands-on roles; experience on commercial development programs a plus
    • Experience with assembly, integration, operations and maintenance of complex aerospace systems across a range of subsystems including avionics, fluids, and mechanical
    • Must be able to set a high hiring bar while evaluating and hiring top talent
    • Extremely customer focused with strong communication skills
    • A demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with teams of diverse skills across large geographic distances
    • Expert in root cause and corrective action analysis and implementation

    • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills and a proven ability to drive complex projects with minimal oversight
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

    Desired

    • Masters or PhD in in aerospace, mechanical, industrial engineering
    • Experience with planning, scheduling tools, MRP, ERP
    • Experience with assembly, integration, operations and maintenance of launch vehicles across a range of launch vehicle subsystems including avionics, fluids, and mechanical
    • Experience in R&D, Development and Production environments, preferably in aerospace, medical devices, or other low volume, safety critical engineered products.
    • Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO9000 Quality Management System and/or related quality systems and programs
    • Experienced with business intelligence tools such as JIRA, Tableau, Sharepoint etc.
    • Quality assurance experience in production environment, where complex, safety critical products are designed, produced and operated
