  • Overview

    As a part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be performing design and analysis tasks on large steel and aluminum structures. You will be an analysis focal for critical design of Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (M-GSE) required to support an orbital launch site, and launch and recovery of an orbital launch vehicle for various spaceflight systems.

    You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of structural analysis. You will be focused on providing the design engineers with an understanding of the proper load cases, FEM development, performing detailed analysis, as well as mentoring team members in the area of structural analysis and design for GSE development. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

    Responsibilities

    • Supports the design and development of structural/mechanical and/or fluids systems for space craft processing, spacecraft integration, and spacecraft launch operations
    • Conceptual and detail design of structural and mechanical GSE for launch support systems and interfaces
    • Load path definition and strength analysis per industry consensus codes
    • Structural loading calculations and evaluation of structural reliability (ASCE-7, OSHA, IBC)
    • Improve existing analytical capabilities and develop best practices for analysis methods
    • Oversee equipment fabrication, assembly and installation
    • Provide guidance to design engineers to improve the performance of designs
    • Coach, mentor and technically assist other engineers
    • Identify opportunities for operational cost savings
    • Communicate technical concepts and analysis results in an accessible manner
    • Ability to travel on a limited basis

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and M.S. degree in structural or civil engineering, and 8+ years of experience designing structural engineering projects – emphasis on steel design preferred
    • Experience designing, building and commissioning GSE for handling, shipping and transporting vehicles and components
    • Experience with fabrication techniques, material selection, and testing
    • Proficient in STAAD and other engineering analysis software
    • Familiar with applicable standards; ASIC, ADM, ASCE, ASME, AWS, OHSA
    • Familiar with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
    • Experience with PTC Creo/Windchill
    • Experience in design and analysis of steel and aluminum structures, lifting fixtures, and access platforms to provide access, ease of maintenance & refurbishment to support recurring operations
    • Professional Engineering license preferred (SE license is not required)
    • Experience as an Engineer responsible for Mechancial Ground Support Equipment (M-GSE) that interfaces with flight hardware is desired
    • Ability to be self-directed and balance several tasks at one time
    • Ability to work effectively in teams
    • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
