  • Overview

    The New Shepard Operations Engineering Sr Manager leads the Operations Engineering (OpsEng) team. Operations Engineering is the first line of support when the vehicle maintenance teams encounter technical discrepancies or report squawks. As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will direct operations engineering evaluation and disposition of these discrepancies and provides technical answers to the maintenance team. The OpsEng team will review technical decisions with the NS Design Authority in areas outside their scope of authority. The Operations Engineering Manager is the Control Account Manager (CAM) responsible for the engineering support of vehicle operations and maintenance. The OpsEng Manager has several direct reports including operations engineers specializing in Fluids, Mechanical systems, avionics, software and other areas as assigned. The OpsEng Manager will report to the New Shepard Director of Operations and Maintenance. The job will be based in Kent with routine travel to the launch site in Texas. Additional responsibilities may be assigned depending on individual experience and qualifications. The Operations Engineering manager position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight

    Responsibilities

    • Direct efforts of assigned personnel to accomplish tasks required for mission readiness and ensures engineering evaluations are consistent with agreed upon scope and escalated to the design authority when appropriate.
    • Support vehicle managers and New Shepard Chief Engineer in assessing technical risk at Mission Readiness Review (MRR)
    • Owns anomaly resolution process, and the alerts/limits levels used by the ops team during launch operations
    • Ensure engineering evaluations are consistent with agreed upon scope and escalated to the design authority when appropriate.
    • Ensure 100% availability of operations engineering support to the maintenance and operations teams
    • Track and evaluate root cause of vehicle discrepancies, and ensure corrective actions are adequate
    • Assign Engineering Back Room (EBR) support for launches from within Operations Engineering team, and coordinates assignment of EBR support from other areas of New Shepard as required
    • Expected to qualify as EBR Lead and coordinate engineer support to the Flight Director and Flight Controllers on launch day
    • Responsible for recruiting and hiring operations engineers
    • Responsible for schedule planning and status for Ops Engineering team
    • Approve POs for items within assigned budget.
    • Responsible for achieving per flight cost targets for engineering support
    • Responsible for labor hours and travel expenses for all engineering personnel supporting operations and maintenance including support from other areas of New Shepard

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering
    • 10 years experience managing teams of engineers.
    • Strong coordination and project management skills. Must be able to track, manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks and jobs.
    • Excellent computer skills with the ability to use a variety of management and planning software tools, including the ability to rapidly learn apply new software tools as required.
    • A proven track record of working successfully in multiple disciplines, and the ability to evaluate technical recommendations from subject matter experts in a wide range of disciplines
    • Proven communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships within the organization.
    • S. citizen, permanent resident alien or otherwise able to review all export-controlled technical information

    Desired

    • Experience providing engineering support to field operations
    • Experience with MRBs
    • Experience evaluating and trending data from operational vehicles and improving preventative maintenance
    • On console support of test or operations
    • Comfortable with radio communications nomenclature and standards
