  • Overview

    As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for Manufacturing Engineering support of the precision cleaning and passivation facilities at Blue. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of preparing space flight hardware for assembly and operation in a Cleaning and Passivation Facility. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop processes to clean, passivate and verify complex flight hardware for use in engine and spacecraft assemblies.
    • Characterize process failures, and implement continuous improvement to drive down process defects and increase first pass yield.
    • Develop inspection procedures to validate critical processes.
    • Within a team, identify improvements to the Cleaning and Passivation Facility layout, and implement upgrades to improve efficiency and throughput.
    • Characterize cleaning and passivation demand, and implement a production strategy to handle both planned and emergent work.
    • Perform a hands-on engineering and liaison role between our design team and our Cleaning and Passivation Facility 
    • Author procedures and work instructions to perform cleaning and passivation work specific to complex propulsion and spacecraft hardware.
    • Schedule cleaning and passivation work within Blue Origin’s Kent and West Texas facilities.
    • Evaluate existing infrastructure and manage capital procurement projects as-needed to improve cleaning and passivation capability.
    • Lead capacity assessments and remove bottlenecks in the cleaning and passivation process.
    • Collaborate with Process Engineering to conduct tests, interpret data, document results and communicate results.
    • Mentor and educate on process architecture, execution, and improvements.
    • Standardize cleaning and passivation best practices.

    Qualifications

    • B.S. degree in engineering, chemistry discipline.
    • 3+ years of experience within complex, rapidly-changing manufacturing environments.
    • Experience working with a chemical processing line in an industrial setting.
    • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team.
    • Experience with both the development and production phases of the product lifecycle.
    • Demonstrated Project Management skills, including project scheduling.
    • Excellent attention to detail and strong task ownership, someone who demonstrates pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills.
    • Experience in both development and production environments.
    • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (current Green Card holder).
    • Willingness to travel domestically up to 25% of the time.

    Desired

    • Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight.
    • Experience with Gross Cleaning, Precision Cleaning, Passivation, and Process Verification.
    • M.S. degree in chemical engineering, materials science engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering or chemistry.
    • Experience with design of experiments.
    • Experience with 3D CAD software.
    • Experience in small company, startup, or growth transition environments.
    • Kaizen, Six Sigma, or related training.
