  • Overview

    As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for the detailed structural analysis for various spaceflight systems.  You will share in the team’s impact on all of aspects of static and dynamic analysis of primary and secondary structural design as well as development of analysis processes. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

    Responsibilities

    • Detailed analysis of primary and secondary airframe structures
    • Detailed fatigue and damage tolerance analysis of primary and secondary airframe structures
    • Supporting configuration development and trade studies
    • Improving enterprise analysis capabilities such as creating process automation tools for model creation, strength checks, and analysis report generation
    • Mentoring designers and junior structural analysts in structural analysis best practices
    • Identification of opportunities for safety improvements and operational cost savings
    • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget and technical status

    Qualifications

    • B.S. degree in engineering and 8+ years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, launch vehicle structures, or automotive.
    • Demonstrated experience on launch vehicles, aircraft, or automotive in several of the following areas:
      • Vehicle load path definition and strength analysis;
      • Structural optimization using standard industry codes (Optistruct, HyperSizer, Nastran Sol 200, etc)
      • Analysis of metallic and/or composite structures (skin-stringer, fittings, sandwich panels, etc);
    • Manufacturing methods, material selection, testing, characterization & allowables development.
    • Familiarity with classical aerospace sizing methods (Bruhn, Niu, Roark, etc).
    • Demonstrated expertise with one or more of the following analysis codes: Nastran, Ansys, Abaqus, LS-Dyna, Optistruct
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder)

    Desired

    • Analysis experience in conventional aircraft DaDT methods, crack growth assessment (hand calcs, NASGRO, VCCT, etc), failsafe/safe-life approaches, residual strength, flight load spectra and aircraft repair servicing;
    • Applied experience in fracture testing: sub-scale and full scale fatigue testing, coupon testing, damage inspection;
    • Experience in damage tolerance NDE/NDI/repair and failure theories in non-metallic materials such as sandwich structures, carbon fiber laminate, bonded structures, etc;
    • Vehicle level structural certification;
    • Composite design and analysis skills in any thermoset, thermoplastic, metal matrix and ceramic matrix composites.
    • Demonstrated process automation experience using scripting languages is highly desired (VBA, Matlab, Python, FORTRAN, etc)
    • Experience with ProEngineer Wildfire 4 or greater
