Overview

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you operate the New Shepard suborbital vehicles. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects resusable rocket operations and commercial space flight. After completing a challenging hands-on training program and upon successful certification, vehicle operators will operate the Propulsion Module and Crew Capsule vehicles at our Texas Lunch site in support of the New Shepard Maintenance group during pre-launch and post-launch activities. Operators will be certified as or work toward certification in the one or more of the launch campaign roles of Capsule Controller, Booster Controller, Ground Controller or Flight Director for launch operations at WTLS. Operators will continually support control panel and procedure improvements for launch operations.

This role is based in Kent, WA with regular travel to our launch site in Texas. Operators may also serve as Test Console Operator (TCON) for integrated testing activities in Kent on an as-needed basis.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the Crew Capsule and Propulsion Module vehicles in support of the maintenance group preparations for New Shepard launch (vehicle checkouts, mission simulation, etc.)
  • Support procedure updates used in across all phases of the operation.
  • Support control console user interface upgrades
  • Support systems safety activities by working toward process and documentation improvement.
  • Operate the vehicles in support of the engineering team to troubleshoot vehicle issues.
  • Managing procedural redlines and updates during test and launch campaigns and drive improvements to Master Launch Procedures which include vehicle operation (e.g. Vehicle Checkout Tests)
  • Work toward and complete certification as a Capsule Controller or Booster Controller for test and launch of the New Shepard.

As Booster or Capsule Controller:

  • Develop proficiency in operating a complex mechanical and fluid system
  • Simultaneously load propellants and pressurant into the rocket on launch day, or prepare the capsule for embarking astronauts
  • Conduct pre-launch checks and perform terminal count procedure to launch New Shepard
  • Respond to abort and recycle scenarios, taking appropriate actions to maintain crew and astronaut safety

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering
  • Previous experience as an operator or controller, including time on console or in a control room, and familiarity with radio communication protocols
  • Significant direct experience with complex vehicle preparations, testing or similar technical hands-on experience
  • Strong ability and desire to understand complex systems, investigate and solve challenging problems, and work in a dynamic environment
  • Safety mindset and takes initiative to improve existing systems, processes, and documentation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Works well under pressure
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn new software tools
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder)

Desired

  • Experience operating pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems and electronics/control systems
  • Experience coding simple software programs or algorithms
  • Experience operating cryogenic systems, including liquid oxygen systems
  • Familiarity with typical aerospace vehicle pressure system and structure manufacturing technologies
  • Experience leading teams as an Operator, Test Conductor or Test Engineer
  • Experience developing, writing and updating operating or test procedures
