  • Overview

    As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished advanced development team, you will be the subject matter expert on the thermal design, modeling, and analysis of various spaceflight systems — with a particular emphasis on spacecraft, in-space stages, and landers. Your position will directly impact the history of space exploration, and your dedicated commitment and detailed attention will further the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight.


    • Perform hand calculations to screen concepts without detailed modeling and to sanity check finite element model results 
    • Build vehicle-level thermal models using SINDA/FLUINT with Thermal Desktop
    • Contribute to thermal control system architecture definition through identification and sizing of components and proposing advanced technology pursuits
    • Model aerospace material thermal properties such as emissivity, absorptivity, and contact resistance, including how these properties change based on surface finishes, assembly methods, and exposure to space environments
    • Perform steady-state and transient finite element thermal analysis in a variety of aerospace environments: launch/ascent, Earth orbit, cis-lunar and interplanetary transit, and landed on celestial bodies such as the Moon, Mars, and asteroids.
    • Work closely with systems and design engineers and leverage thermal analyses to develop integrated design solutions, rapidly assess conceptual designs, and establish thermal requirements and performance parameters
    • Derive subsystem and component-level thermal environments from system-level models


    • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or equivalent technical field
    • At least 5 years industry experience in thermal design and analysis of space systems, preferably spacecraft, in-space stages, and/or landers
    • Ability to apply judgement, developed through theory and experience, to assess the appropriate level of detail required in a thermal model 
    • Experience working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
    • History of developing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien (current Green Card holder)


    • M.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or equivalent technical field
    • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design through field support)
    • Experience with a scripting language or platform such as Matlab or Python
    • Familiarity with version control (e.g. git/gitlab, mercurial, subversion)
    • Experience with collaboration tools such as Confluence and JIRA
    • Experience with proposal development
