Overview

As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished advanced development team, you will be the subject matter expert on the aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, and computational fluid dynamics evaluation of various spaceflight systemswith a particular emphasis on launch and re-entry vehicles. Your position will directly impact the history of space exploration, and your dedicated commitment and detailed attention will further the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Create aerodynamic databases for use in trajectory, GN&C (guidance, navigation, and control), and structural loads analyses using both analysis and test methods (e.g., CFD, wind tunnel testing, etc.)
  • Support vehicle configuration development, OML definition, and trade studies
  • Perform steady-state and transient aerodynamic analysis from the subsonic through hypersonic regimes
  • Build vehicle-level models and perform aero(thermal) CFD analysis using CFD++, SU2, FUN3D, LAURA, CART3D
  • Perform stability and control analysis in support of vehicle level systems requirements, configuration optimization, and trade studies
  • Work closely with systems and design engineers and leverage aerodynamic analyses to develop integrated design solutions, rapidly assess conceptual designs, and establish thermal requirements and performance parameters

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a M.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering or equivalent technical field
  • At least 5 years industry experience in aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, or flight mechanics
  • Ability to generate aerodynamic models and conduct analysis at varying levels of detail in support of trade studies and evaluations
  • Demonstrated experience with CFD tools, aerodynamic testing, and engineering methods
  • Experience working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
  • History of developing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien (current Green Card holder)

Desired

  • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design through field support)
  • Experience supporting wind tunnel testing, flight testing, including data reduction and post-flight data analysis
  • Proficient with a scripting language or platform such as MATLAB or Python
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g. git/gitlab, mercurial, subversion)
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Confluence and JIRA
  • Experience with proposal development
  • Knowledge in the use of 3D CAD tools (Creo is preferred)
