Overview

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will combine commercial and custom-developed computational tools with systems engineering processes to design launch vehicles, in-space transportation systems, and other infrastructure. You will develop concepts of operation, conceptual designs, and system architectures; you will guide and perform parametric and sizing analyses and trade studies. Our products are typically information, so you will be expected to write cogent and succinct technical memos and devise innovative, intuitive, and delightful ways to visualize quantitative information. In addition to the technical factors, Advanced Concepts also considers how future projects integrate into the incremental development plans of current programs, influences the technology development roadmap, and responds by adjusting to programmatic considerations such as personnel, cost, and schedule constraints. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.
 

Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts of operation based on external and internal stakeholder requirements
  • Perform conceptual design, sizing, and analysis studies
  • Define system architectures and associated top-level requirements
  • Perform heuristic and functional decomposition to scope the design and development of new endeavors
  • Develop, validate, and use a wide-range of custom engineering tools
  • Document and present findings and recommendations
 

Qualifications

Required
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years industry experience in space systems, preferably launch systems development and operations
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
  • Ability to develop solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Applicant must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien
  • Exhibit excellent judgment and be comfortable making high-quality and high-velocity decisions
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder)
 

Desired

  • M.S. in Engineering
  • Knowledge of systems engineering practices such as trade studies, establishing system metrics, and functional requirements derivation
  • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design through field support)
  • Experience and knowledge of multidisciplinary design optimization tools and techniques
  • Experience and knowledge of system-level analysis tools including model-based engineering frameworks
  • Experience with Earth-to-orbit and in-space mission design and trajectory analysis (e.g. OTIS, Copernicus, STK Astrogator)
  • Experience with propulsion and fluid-system analysis and sizing tools (e.g. GFSSP, ROCETS, etc.)
  • Experience with a scripting language or platform such as Matlab or Python
  • Familiarity with version control (e.g. git/gitlab, mercurial, subversion)
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Confluence and JIRA
  • Experience with CAD tools (e.g. Creo)
  • Experience with thermal systems analysis tools
  • Mass properties estimation and sizing
  • Cost estimation and modeling
  • Operations modelling
  • Experience with proposal development
